It was great to participate in an impressive conference on “Transitions of Legal Systems: 30 Years after the fall of the Berlin Wall” at the Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, North Macedonia. I was impressed by the quality of the presentations as well as the organization by the home university. In my presentation I focused on the potential of energy law harmonization as a driver of both legal transition and European integration.
More broadly, it is notable that the conference was held in the week that we remembered a Europe divided and reflected on the long and unfinished journey of reconciliation. In the Western Balkans, too, the pathway to European integration must remain credible. As I said in my presentation, if we ask countries to undertake difficult transitions, we need to offer them a destination.
